Wreck on I-70 Claims Historic Road Sign, Driver Uninjured

A crash on westbound Interstate 70 near mile marker 231, just west of the Colorado-Utah border, occurred at 6:13 p.m. Saturday.

According to the Lower Valley Fire District, a sprinter pulling a cargo trailer veered off the highway after a tire blew. The vehicle sustained significant damage and struck the historic “Leaving Colorado” road sign, which was destroyed.

Fire officials confirmed that the driver escaped without injuries and declined medical attention. Colorado State Patrol troopers also responded to the scene.

Authorities reported that lane closures were implemented while crews managed the incident and assessed the damage. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

The sign, which faced westbound traffic entering Utah, was noted by fire officials, who expressed condolences in a social media post: “RIP. You served travelers well.”
