MONROE, Wis. (WKOW) — Darlington Police Chief Szvon Conway was arrested Friday night for Operating While Under the Influence (OWI) after crashing into a retaining wall.
According to authorities, the incident occurred at approximately 10:36 p.m. when Conway was driving west on 13th Street and turned onto 20th Avenue, veering off the road and colliding with the wall. The crash resulted in severe damage to his vehicle; however, the airbag did not deploy.
Conway sustained injuries in the accident and was arrested for first offense OWI. He was also cited for hit and run, failure to notify law enforcement of an accident, inattentive driving, and improper lane deviation. He was later released to a responsible party, with a mandatory court appearance required.
Darlington Mayor Dave Roelli confirmed Conway's position within the police department, but did not disclose whether he is currently on leave. Roelli stated, “We will be following procedures outlined in the law dealing with matters pertaining to issues such as what we have been presented with this morning.”
The investigation is ongoing.
