EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, CA (Oct. 3, 2023) — Eight individuals were confirmed dead following a B-52 crash during a test flight at Edwards Air Force Base on Monday.
Authorities identified the victims as men aged 32 to 53, including four active-duty airmen, one reservist, and three civilians. According to Col. Thomas Tauer, commander of the 412th Test Wing, the victims were described as “dedicated professionals, beloved family members and irreplaceable teammates.”
The airfield remains closed, while other base operations have resumed. An official cause of the crash has yet to be determined, with investigations expected to last up to six months.
The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress was participating in a test mission aimed at extending the service life of one of the oldest aircraft in the U.S. fleet. The bomber had recently arrived at Edwards after modernization efforts in San Antonio, Texas.
Emergency response teams were deployed to the scene with medical aid promptly administered.
