WASHINGTON (7News) — A passenger died early Saturday in a two-vehicle crash near the White House, with one driver arrested after fleeing the scene.

According to the U.S. Park Police (USPP), the incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. at the intersection of 17th Street and Constitution Avenue NW.

Authorities said the driver of the vehicle involved in the collision fled on foot but was quickly apprehended by the U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division. The suspect has since been turned over to USPP custody for further processing.

The driver of the second vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital. However, a passenger from that vehicle was during the crash and at the scene.

The body was subsequently transferred to the District of Columbia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The USPP Traffic Safety Unit has launched an investigation and crash reconstruction at the scene. Following discussions with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia, USPP has taken charge of the investigation and the arrest related to the fatal incident.

The suspect remains in custody while charges are being coordinated. Road closures that were established for the investigation have since been lifted, and all roadways have reopened.

The investigation is ongoing.
