ST. CHARLES PARISH, La. (WKRC) – A drunk driver fled a traffic stop on Interstate 310 and jumped into a swamp on June 7, leading to an alligator attack, authorities said.

According to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office and Louisiana State Police, officers attempted a traffic stop after observing 40-year-old Victor Rivas driving recklessly, including hitting a concrete barrier and losing a tire.

Upon contacting Rivas, officers suspected he was impaired. During the investigation, Rivas fled on foot, jumping from the elevated interstate into the swamp below.

When found, Rivas fled again into another swampy area, where he was attacked by an alligator, sustaining injuries to both arms, according to officials.

Despite his injuries, Rivas continued to evade police until a drone located him. He was taken to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Upon his release, he was arrested and charged with operating a vehicle while impaired and resisting an officer.

Authorities confirmed that the alligator involved was not injured and has since returned to the swamp.
