JEFFERSON COUNTY — A vehicle crash on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2026, resulted in the death of a 36-year-old man near Boulder Hill.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, the deceased was identified as Jared Atchley of Helena.

Montana Highway Patrol (MHP) reported Atchley was driving north on I-15 between Boulder and Jefferson City with two children in the vehicle.

Witnesses reported the vehicle moved into the left lane around mile marker 169 to overtake slower traffic, then drifted off the road. It re-entered the highway, slid across both lanes, and struck a guardrail.

The impact caused the vehicle to roll, resulting in Atchley's ejection from the vehicle; he was not wearing a seat belt at the time.

First responders pronounced Atchley deceased at the scene. The children, who were seat-belted, suffered minor injuries and were transported to St. Peter's Health for treatment.

No further details on lane closures or an ongoing investigation have been released.
