Secret Service Detains Fleeing Driver Following Fatal Crash Near White House.

A two-vehicle crash in Northwest D.C. early Saturday resulted in one fatality and a significant injury, according to authorities.

The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. at the intersection of 17th Street and Constitution Avenue NW.

Authorities reported that the driver of the vehicle involved in the collision fled the scene but was apprehended shortly thereafter by U.S. Secret Service officers. The suspect is now in the custody of U.S. Park Police.

The second vehicle's driver sustained injuries that are not life-threatening and was transported to a local hospital.

However, a passenger from that vehicle was during the crash and at the scene, authorities said.

The District of Columbia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has taken custody of the deceased.

The U.S. Park Police Traffic Safety Unit is conducting the investigation and crash reconstruction. Following consultation with the U.S. Attorney's Office, the U.S. Park Police has taken charge of the investigation and the suspect's arrest.

The suspect remains in custody, and charges are being coordinated with the U.S. Attorney's Office, according to officials.

Road closures associated with the investigation have since been lifted, and all affected roadways have reopened.

The investigation is ongoing.
