Secret Service Detains Fleeing Driver After Deadly Crash Near White House

A passenger was killed in a two-vehicle crash about 3:30 a.m. Saturday at 17th Street and Constitution Avenue NW in Washington, D.C.

According to the U.S. Park Police, two vehicles collided at the intersection, and a passenger was and at the scene.

Authorities said the driver of the second vehicle was taken to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

The suspected driver in the other vehicle fled on foot and was quickly apprehended by members of the U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division, police said. The suspect was transferred to U.S. Park Police custody.

The District of Columbia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner took custody of the body, authorities said.

According to the U.S. Park Police, the Traffic Safety Unit conducted the initial investigation and crash reconstruction. After consultation with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia, the U.S. Park Police assumed responsibility for the investigation and arrest.

Authorities said the suspect remains in custody and charges are being coordinated with the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Road closures linked to the investigation have been lifted and all affected roadways have reopened. The investigation is ongoing.
