DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Fla. (CBS12) — A deadly crash at a toll booth on June 1 claimed the life of a toll worker, prompting ongoing investigations into the incident.

According to the Volusia Sheriff's Office, deputies received multiple 911 calls reporting a suspected drunk driver shortly before the crash. Witnesses described a pickup truck being driven erratically along Peninsula Drive, nearly colliding with other vehicles.

Authorities reported that 35-year-old Deanna Harrell, the suspected driver, had been drinking earlier that day. Sheriff Mike Chitwood confirmed the timeline of the crash, which occurred just moments after 63-year-old Tammy Jo “Tiny Joe” Baker entered the toll booth.

“At 12:38, she kills our victim,” Chitwood stated, indicating that Baker was struck less than two minutes after entering the booth.

Body camera footage released by authorities shows first responders arriving swiftly after the impact. Harrell, who continued south after the collision, was later found stuck in the sand with signs of intoxication. She was taken into custody and placed under the Baker Act after making threats of self-harm.

Harrell has since been charged with vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter in connection with Baker's death. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities committed to holding those responsible accountable.

Baker's family gathered to honor her memory, describing her as vibrant and devoted. “She was always smiling. She was always happy,” said her daughter, Luella Harris. City officials have urged drivers in the beachside area to be vigilant, emphasizing safety for both workers and pedestrians.
