OKLAHOMA CITY, (KOKH) — A wrong-way crash on Interstate 40 on May 22 resulted in four fatalities, prompting the Oklahoma Highway Patrol to charge the suspect with 10 offenses.
Michael Rosario-Cruz was driving against traffic on I-40 when he collided with another vehicle, killing four people. He is now facing four counts of second-degree murder, two DUI charges, and several firearms-related offenses.
Authorities reported that Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed a detainer on Rosario-Cruz, who is not a legal U.S. citizen and was granted DACA status in 2015. Public Safety Commissioner Tim Tipton characterized the incident as intentional, stating, “This was a murder, this was an intentional act.”
Witnesses reported seeing a wrong-way driver around the I-40 and Meridian area, leading to a swift response from troopers, who arrived just seconds after the collision. A pistol and beer cans were discovered in Rosario-Cruz's vehicle.
The families of the victims expressed relief that charges are being pursued. Regina Hickson, mother of victim Kiercy Hickson, emphasized the importance of accountability, stating, “I pray that the justice system does right by these kids.” Shirley Salazar, mother of victim Haliegh Salazar, also called for maximum sentencing for the suspect.
This investigation remains ongoing, with service information for the victims available through local channels.
