GEORGETOWN — A Conway man died in a boat crash on the Sampit River on May 23, according to authorities.
Wendell “Jay” Holbert III, 49, succumbed to injuries sustained during the collision, Georgetown County Coroner Chase Ridgeway confirmed.
Details remain limited; two boats reportedly collided early that morning, as indicated by Ridgeway and a statement from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR), which is leading the investigation.
SCDNR officials noted that few details are available due to the early stage of the inquiry. The incident occurred near the Carroll Ashmore Campbell Marine Complex, Ridgeway added.
Emergency services responded, but further details regarding the units involved and any additional injuries have not been released. The investigation is ongoing.
