MOUNTAIN HOME, ID — A lockdown was initiated at Mountain Home Air Force Base on Sunday following a midair collision involving two fighter jets during the Gunfighter Skies Air Show.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:30 p.m. local time, about 2 miles northwest of the base. According to the base's social media, two jets crashed to the ground, triggering an immediate emergency response.
Authorities said emergency responders were on-site and an investigation has been launched. Specific details regarding injuries or fatalities have not yet been confirmed.
The base, home to the U.S. Air Force's 366th Fighter Wing, known as the “Gunfighters,” canceled the air show and advised the public to avoid traveling to the area. Witnesses reported seeing four parachutes deploying near the crash scene.
Video footage posted online captured the moment of the collision as well as the ensuing smoke from the crash. Witnesses described a calm atmosphere among attendees, many of whom were military families.
