NEW YORK — Two men died and three others were critically injured when a car jumped a curb near W. 109th St. and Amsterdam Ave. Friday evening.
According to the New York Police Department, the collision occurred around 7 p.m. May 15 after a vehicle struck several parked cars, mounted the curb and hit pedestrians outside a barbershop in Manhattan.
Police said two men, ages 35 and 46, were pronounced dead. Three others, ages 36, 44 and 51, were transported to nearby hospitals in critical condition.
According to The New York Post, citing police, the driver was identified as Elvin Suarez, 61, of Morningside Heights. Authorities said he was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for evaluation and blood-alcohol testing.
Authorities said Suarez faces charges including manslaughter, vehicular assault and driving while intoxicated.
The NYPD announced it was conducting a collision investigation in the area and urged drivers to avoid West 109th Street and Amsterdam Avenue.
The investigation remains ongoing.
