A 3-year-old boy critically injured in a wrong-way crash on Florida's Turnpike has died, according to Florida Highway Patrol.
The accident occurred late Saturday night in Indian River County, involving three vehicles. A 26-year-old woman from Fort Pierce was driving a white 2025 Kia K4 sedan southbound in the northbound lanes when it collided head-on with a black 2023 Kia Pacifica.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The 3-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl, also from Fort Pierce, were passengers in her vehicle; the boy sustained critical injuries while the girl suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Three passengers in the Kia Pacifica—a 24-year-old woman, a 50-year-old woman, and a 74-year-old woman, all from Royal Palm Beach—were transported to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The Pacifica's driver, a 22-year-old man from Margate, also sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of a third vehicle, a 48-year-old man from Mount Dora, and a 23-year-old male passenger from Mount Dora were unharmed. A 46-year-old female passenger from Dora suffered minor injuries.
The investigation is ongoing, and lane closures were reported at the crash site. Further details will be released as they become available.
