Fatal High-Speed Chase in Arkansas Involves State Trooper

A West Memphis man died following a high-speed pursuit with the Arkansas State Police on December 19, 2023, on eastbound Interstate 40.

According to authorities, Mario Paige, 43, was fleeing from police at speeds exceeding 140 mph when he suddenly braked, losing control of his vehicle. The incident occurred near the 284-mile marker and involved the trooper attempting a PIT maneuver.

Video evidence showed the trooper's colliding with Paige's vehicle, which subsequently crashed into a roadside barrier, narrowly missing another truck. Paige was the sole occupant, and the collision resulted in fatal injuries.

The state trooper, who reportedly suffered minor injuries from colliding with a commercial vehicle during the pursuit, has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation by the ASP's Criminal Investigation Division.

The pursuit began while the trooper was assisting a drug task force. Authorities confirmed that Paige was wanted on multiple felony warrants and was driving recklessly, endangering other motorists.

ASP Col. Mike Hagar emphasized the dangers of fleeing from law enforcement, stating, “Fleeing from police is a selfish act that puts innocent motorists at risk and has grave consequences.”

An internal review is ongoing to assess the incident's circumstances, and updates will be released as the investigation proceeds.
