Indianapolis — The FBI and ICE have arrested 26-year-old Alexis Otoniel Hernandez-Araujo, a citizen of El Salvador, in connection with a fatal crash on July 6, 2024.
Authorities reported that Hernandez-Araujo was taken into custody on Thursday morning while unlawfully present in the United States. The crash occurred in the 1200 block of Reisner Street.
Hernandez-Araujo was allegedly driving under the influence at high speeds when he collided with another vehicle driven by a pregnant woman. The incident resulted in the death of his 19-year-old brother, a passenger in Hernandez-Araujo's vehicle, who was ejected from the car.
The occupants of the other vehicle suffered serious injuries. A 5-year-old child sustained critical injuries, including a skull fracture and a broken hip. Both a 14-year-old passenger and the female driver were also seriously injured.
Officials confirmed that at the time of the crash, Hernandez-Araujo's blood alcohol content was above the legal limit of 0.08. The collision also caused significant damage to seven other vehicles in the vicinity.
