Mount Pleasant, SC – July 30, 2023: A late morning collision at N. Hwy 17 and Long Point Road resulted in the arrest of a 57-year-old man for DUI 2nd, according to authorities.

Police responded to a crash involving a Buick and a Jeep Wrangler shortly after 11 a.m., where they detected a strong odor of alcohol from the driver of the Jeep, identified as David Papke. Officers noted Papke exhibited slow speech and glassy eyes.

When questioned, Papke admitted to consuming two to three cocktails but stated he stopped drinking between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. Following Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFST), which he partially could not complete due to reported previous injuries, officers observed multiple indicators of impairment during the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test.

Authorities reported that Papke struggled to recite the alphabet correctly when asked. After his arrest, he declined further questioning and refused to provide a breath sample.

Papke was taken to the Al Cannon Detention Center in North Charleston, where he was booked and charged with DUI 2nd. His previous DUI charge dates back to 2017. No injuries or fatalities were reported from the incident.
