Six Dead in Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-20 Near Terrell
Six people were killed and several injured in a multi-vehicle crash on I-20 near Terrell on Saturday afternoon.
The Elmo Fire Department was dispatched at approximately 2:40 p.m. to a crash involving three 18-wheelers and four passenger vehicles, located on westbound I-20 east of Hiram Road.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), traffic was backed up when the driver of a red truck-tractor fell asleep, colliding with a Ford F-150 occupied by five people. The impact caused the Ford to hit two 18-wheelers, one of which jack-knifed. Additional vehicles, a Jeep Compass, a Ford Mustang, and a Honda, were also struck.
Firefighters reported five fatalities and one individual with critical injuries. Several others sustained less severe injuries and were transported to Dallas-area hospitals for treatment.
DPS confirmed a sixth victim died on Monday. All lanes of I-20 were temporarily closed due to the crash, reopening after 10 p.m. Saturday, authorities said.
The investigation remains ongoing, according to Texas DPS.
