Lede: A head-on collision on North Highway 17A in Bonneau on Saturday, Aug. 16, resulted in the death of 44-year-old Jennifer Dangerfield.
Authorities reported that Dangerfield was pronounced dead at the scene after her Toyota SUV was struck by a Nissan truck driven by 58-year-old Gerald Langdale of St. Stephen. The crash occurred at Old Cherry Hill Road in Moncks Corner.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Langdale was traveling northbound when he veered left of center, colliding with Dangerfield's vehicle. A passenger in Dangerfield's SUV sustained serious injuries, including a broken back, neck, and leg, and was transported to a hospital.
Law enforcement noted that Langdale exhibited signs of impairment, including glassy eyes and slurred speech, and admitted to consuming alcohol before driving. He consented to a field sobriety test, where multiple signs of impairment were observed.
Langdale was arrested and charged with felony DUI resulting in death and felony DUI resulting in great bodily injury. He is currently held at the Berkeley County Detention Center, with bond to be determined later. Court documents reveal his license is suspended due to a prior DUI conviction.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
