GARLAND, TX — One person was killed in a T-bone accident involving 18-year-old Alan Ernaldo Marmol Melendez on Wednesday morning.
The crash occurred around 2:30 a.m. at the intersection of South Garland Avenue and Kingsley Road, according to authorities. The victim, who has not yet been identified, was driving a Nissan X-terra.
Melendez, who was behind the wheel of a Cadillac Escalade, has been charged with intoxication manslaughter. Authorities reported that he was allegedly racing a Chevy Silverado at high speeds when the accident took place. Following the collision, Melendez claimed he struck the right side of the Nissan, causing it to roll over and catch fire on a nearby railroad track.
Authorities indicated that Melendez confessed to consuming two alcoholic beverages before the incident. He stated he was driving his friend home at the time. A blood sample has been submitted for analysis as part of the investigation.
The Garland Police Department responded to the scene, where they found the crash site less than a mile from South Shiloh Road. Melendez's friend sustained minor injuries but is not facing any charges.
Investigators continue to look into the circumstances surrounding the involvement of another vehicle in the race.
