An Iowa man was arrested Thursday after a fatal truck-tractor collision Wednesday on State Route 79 near the Hebron village limits, authorities said.
According to charging documents, Derek Baldwin, of Iowa, is charged with aggravated vehicular homicide in the death of Alan Kissell, 77, of Newark.
Authorities said the crash involved a truck Baldwin was allegedly driving and a farm tractor operated by Kissell on State Route 79.
Motorcyclists told law enforcement the truck cut them off, swerved around them, and then collided with the tractor.
According to investigators, Baldwin fled the scene; Hebron Police said he was detained as of 4:15 p.m. Thursday.
Police reports noted the truck had serious front-end damage, airbag deployment, and a headprint on the inside of the windshield; investigators wrote the tractor was “totally destroyed.”
Court records indicate Baldwin purchased two beers at a bar around 5:30 p.m., about an hour before the crash.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating.
