LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — A carjacking incident that originated in a Walmart parking lot culminated in a deadly crash on Charleston Boulevard over the weekend.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police stated that 37-year-old Benito Saragosa was asleep in a running black Hyundai Sonata while waiting for a friend. According to authorities, 55-year-old Harold Allen entered the vehicle and drove away with Saragosa still inside.
Police said the crash occurred shortly after the vehicle was reported missing by Saragosa's family member. Saragosa was pronounced dead at the scene, while Allen survived and is now in custody.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud collision, described as a “screeching” sound followed by a “bam.” Mirna Serrano, a nearby resident, expressed concern over the rising crime in the area.
According to police data, motor vehicle theft reports decreased by 21% in the first four months of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. However, arrests related to vehicle theft rose by 25% from last year, with notable increases in the South Central area.
Retired Henderson police officer David Kohlmeier emphasized the importance of awareness and preparation. He advised families to rehearse emergency measures and to prioritize safety over material possessions in the event of a carjacking.
