Crash at Children's Birthday Party Leaves One Dead, Thirteen Injured

Prince George's County, Md. (7News) — A 66-year-old D.C. man has been charged after his vehicle crashed into a children's birthday party, resulting in one death and injuries to 14 others.

According to the Bladensburg Police Department, the incident occurred around 10 p.m. Saturday on the 4100 block of 56th Avenue. The driver, identified as Sunday Joseph, reportedly reversed his into a party tent, causing significant injuries.

Authorities stated that Joseph fled the scene but surrendered to police on Monday before 11:30 a.m. He faces charges including criminal negligent manslaughter by vehicle, negligent manslaughter by auto, and failure to remain at the scene of a fatal accident.

Ashley Hernandez Gutierrez, 31, died in the crash. Of the 14 injured, seven children have been treated and released from the hospital, while one child remains . Two out of six injured adults are still receiving treatment, police confirmed.

Witnesses described the scene as chaotic. One eyewitness, who aided in lifting the vehicle off victims, reported hearing a loud impact before rushing for help.

Investigators are working to determine whether or alcohol played a role in the incident. Lane closures were in effect as authorities conducted their investigation.
