WOBURN, MA — A Massachusetts State Police sergeant's law enforcement certification has been suspended following his indictment in connection with a December 2023 fatal crash.

Sgt. Scott Quigley's certification was suspended by the Peace Officer Standards and Training, or POST, Commission, citing evidence of potential criminal conduct. The commission announced the suspension in an update posted Tuesday.

Quigley was indicted on felony motor vehicle homicide for a crash that occurred on December 12, 2023, in Woburn, according to the Suffolk District Attorney's Office. Investigators stated Quigley struck a carrying 37-year-old Angelo Schettino, who succumbed to crash-related injuries on January 13, 2024. The van's driver also sustained injuries.

At the time of the incident, Quigley was off duty and has since been named in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Schettino's estate. Authorities highlighted that the allegations against Quigley came to light during an unrelated murder trial in Lowell District Court, where Quigley worked as an investigator.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan noted that her office was unaware of the allegations during jury impanelment and referred the matter to Suffolk County in January. An investigation into the case's initial handling by State Police is ongoing, including questions regarding Quigley's blood alcohol content, which was reported at .11, above the legal limit of .08.

Following the incident, Quigley received a warning for crossing marked lanes and was on injury leave for eight months.
