New Orleans Officials Propose Traffic Safety Plan Following Fatal

NEW ORLEANS — Hours after a fatal incident occurred early Thursday on Chef Menteur Highway, city officials unveiled a plan to enhance traffic safety.

The proposed plan aims to improve safety across 66 miles of New Orleans roads, totaling $171 million. Improvements will include curb extensions and speed cushions, although funding has not yet been secured.

According to the New Orleans Police Department, the recent crash involved a woman walking across Chef Menteur Highway. The ensuing investigation resulted in the closure of the eastern foot of the Danziger Bridge for at least two hours.

Jennifer Ruley, Engineer with the Department of Public Works, emphasized the urgency of addressing traffic issues to the City Council's Transportation Committee, highlighting the need for immediate changes to prevent future tragedies.

Council Vice President Matthew Willard praised the initiative as “desperately needed.” Earlier planning efforts included a $750,000 federal grant for a comprehensive safety study, with community input solicited through surveys last year.

NOPD Captain Anthony Micheu reported 4,126 injury-causing crashes in 2025, reflecting a 14% decrease from the previous year. There were 53 fatal crashes, marking another 14% decline. The NOPD attributes these reductions to enhanced enforcement and awareness campaigns.

Micheu confirmed an ongoing investigation into the hit-and-run, but did not disclose the identity of the victim.

The plan targets key arteries, including Broad Street and North Claiborne Avenue, advocating for safer crossings, improved lighting, and more signals, which currently exist at less than 20% of signalized intersections.

City officials stated the necessary funds and timeline for construction remain undefined, amid a potential $222 million budget deficit. Ruley urged state support for 19 miles of roads included in the proposal, such as Hayne Boulevard and Elysian Fields Avenue.

Councilmember Eugene Green called on drivers to reduce speed and take responsibility to avert further tragedies.
