COLUMBUS, Ohio — The family of Master Sgt. Tyler Simmons began funeral preparations Tuesday after his remains returned Sunday to Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base.
According to the family, loved ones received Simmons at the base and accompanied a procession to a Columbus funeral home.
Authorities said Simmons died in a KC-135 refueling aircraft crash in Iraq.
Columbus City Schools honored Simmons Tuesday evening; the Board of Education passed a resolution recognizing his service, officials said.
Simmons graduated from Eastmoor Academy in 2015, according to the district.
