HAMPTON, Va. (WKRC) — A DUI crash in Hampton killed a 1-year-old boy earlier this week, according to Virginia State Police.
The incident occurred on I-64 early Monday morning when a 14-year-old girl, allegedly under the influence, lost control of the vehicle. The car struck a guardrail before hitting a lane barrier. The child, identified as Ma'Khai, was not properly restrained and sustained serious injuries. He was transported to the hospital and died on Thursday.
Authorities confirmed that the child's mother was driving and also not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. She was hospitalized with serious injuries.
The boy's family reported that Ma'Khai would have celebrated his second birthday on April 4. His grandmother, April Logan, expressed anger but said she does not hold hatred for the young driver.
The 14-year-old faces multiple charges, including DUI, driving without a license, and a child restraint violation. Additional charges may be forthcoming.
