Car Crashes Into Restaurant in West Columbia, Injuring Two Employees

WEST COLUMBIA, SC — A vehicle crashed into the Black Rooster restaurant around 11:30 p.m. on March 27, injuring two employees.

According to authorities, the incident occurred when a driver being pursued by law enforcement lost control at the intersection of Meeting Street (U.S. Highway 1) and Sunset Boulevard (U.S. Highway 378), crashing into the building. The driver, a minor, is charged with and other offenses.

Two employees were transported to the emergency room with minor injuries, as confirmed by restaurant owner Kristian Niemi. Both individuals suffered bumps and bruises, and they are expected to recover.

West Columbia police reported that staff members were cleaning at the time, which may have limited injuries. The driver struck a trash enclosure and a fryer oil collection bin, possibly minimizing damage to the structure.

Niemi stated the initial inspection indicates substantial damage, including concerns about a broken pipe beneath the restaurant. He is coordinating with insurance representatives and contractors while prioritizing the well-being of his team.

The restaurant plans to redistribute food to its sister establishments, Dragon Room and Bourbon, while staff will undergo training to ensure continued employment during repairs. “We're just happy everybody's OK,” Niemi said.

Updates will be shared on Black Rooster's social media platforms as the investigation continues.
