WABAUNSEE COUNTY, Kan. (TNND) — A 2-year-old girl died from injuries sustained in a crash on Interstate 70 near the Paxico Rest Area on March 15.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP), the child, identified as Diora Lewis, was seated on a sibling's lap in a 2007 Ford F-150. The vehicle veered off the road just before 5 p.m., overcorrected, and struck a limestone embankment.

KHP reported that Diora was critically injured in the crash and later died at Children's Mercy Hospital three days afterward. Her mother and three siblings, ages 11, 14, and 16, sustained minor injuries.

Authorities noted that Kansas law requires children under 4 years old to be secured in a seat. “All children under four are required to ride in a car seat,” KHP stated online, emphasizing the importance of rear-facing child seats for safety.

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation, with no additional details available at this time.
