At the State Capitol on Monday, lawmakers shared poignant stories from crash survivors and victims while discussing the ‘Safe Roads Save Lives Act.' The proposal, which garnered bipartisan support, was not brought to a vote during this legislative session.

The legislation aimed to empower Milwaukee police to implement a traffic safety camera program designed to monitor drivers exceeding the speed limit by more than 15 mph or those running red lights.

“I am here to advocate for community unity,” stated a relative of a crash victim. “This red light camera initiative would significantly improve safety in our city. While I recognize the concerns surrounding privacy, it is compromised when individuals are not held accountable for their actions.”

Advocates urged lawmakers to prioritize this measure, emphasizing that if it cannot be enacted this session, it must be a focal point in the upcoming one.

The event also featured a quilt among various art exhibits, which were intended to raise awareness about the consequences of traffic-related fatalities and the urgent need for legislative action.
