GREENACRES, Fla. (TNND) — Rock musician Lenny Kravitz was not aboard a Learjet 60 that crashed, killing nine people, on Sunday afternoon.
The aircraft departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas, headed for North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Emergency responders received the mayday call shortly after 12:48 p.m.
Witnesses reported the plane crashed around 12:47 p.m., exploding upon impact, and leaving a significant crater at the site. Emergency crews responded promptly, and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis noted that damage from the crash led to the temporary evacuation of approximately 600 residents from a nearby mobile home park.
NTSB board member Tom Chapman confirmed that the crew reported issues with light clear ice and moderate turbulence before descending from 37,000 feet. The crew's last transmissions included a mayday alert before the aircraft's descent.
The co-pilot was identified as 20-year-old Nathalia Filgueiras, a Boca Raton resident. The pilot is currently unconfirmed, and an investigation into the crash is ongoing. No additional injuries were reported on the ground.
Authorities urged the public to refrain from speculating about the crash as investigations continue.
