Train Collision in Spain Claims Numerous Lives

URDA, Spain — A devastating train collision occurred Wednesday morning near Urda, Toledo, resulting in at least 68 fatalities and over 100 injuries.

According to officials, the crash involved a high-speed train operated by Renfe rear-ending a stationary Iryo train on the Madrid-Seville line. The incident transpired between 8:36 a.m. and 8:52 a.m. local time amid reported failures of the LZB train management safety system, which had disrupted all traffic in the area.

Authorities stated that manual oversight by ADIF, the state-owned railway management, erroneously allowed the Renfe train to proceed despite a red signal. Transportation Minister Óscar Puente confirmed the train was traveling at around 124 miles per hour at the time of impact.

Among the deceased, 24 passengers were aboard the Renfe train, while 44 were on the Iryo train. Emergency services, including ambulances, police, and civil guard units, responded promptly, with helicopters deployed for rescue operations at the scene.

Witnesses described chaotic scenes inside the train cars, with reports of people sustaining various injuries. Medical aid is being provided at local hospitals, and authorities are coordinating blood donations for the injured.

A full investigation is underway, with authorities pledging accountability for any negligence or failures in safety protocols. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed condolences, emphasizing a commitment to clarifying the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
