HOBART, Ind. — Two people sustained life-threatening injuries in a crash on I-65 northbound at the 157.5 mile marker early Monday morning.
At approximately 2:30 a.m., 911 dispatchers received reports of a wrong-way driver involved in a collision between 61st Avenue and Ridge Road. Witnesses indicated a white vehicle was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes before colliding nearly head-on with a black northbound vehicle.
Indiana State Police found both drivers unconscious and trapped. Troopers administered first aid until medical personnel arrived. Both drivers were subsequently extricated and transported to the University of Chicago with serious injuries.
Preliminary investigations indicate that a 2016 Hyundai SUV was traveling southbound in the inside northbound lane when it struck a black Nissan SUV traveling northbound. The Hyundai came to rest on the inside shoulder, while the Nissan settled on the outside shoulder.
Authorities closed the roadway for approximately three hours for evidence collection. Alcohol and/or drugs are believed to be contributing factors. Once the investigation concludes, findings will be submitted to the Lake County Prosecutor's Office for potential charges.
