UPDATE: Monday, 10 a.m.

A crash on North Kulani Road in Mountain View late Friday night claimed the life of 42-year-old Kainalu Rabusitz.

Rabusitz, a Mountain View resident, was the driver and sole occupant of a 1998 pickup truck traveling south on North Kulani Road when he lost control, crashing into a tree before overturning, according to Hawaii Police Department. He was at the scene at 10:32 p.m.

This incident marks the 26th traffic fatality on the Big Island in 2026, a significant increase compared to 17 at the same time last year.

Authorities responded to the crash at approximately 10:07 p.m. Fire and medical personnel attempted life-saving measures but were unsuccessful.

The man's identity was initially withheld pending confirmation and notification of next of kin, and an autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

Preliminary investigations suggest that speed, lack of seatbelt use, and potential alcohol or drug involvement may have contributed to the accident.
