BOSTON, MA – September 22, 2026 – A hit-and-run crash on the River Street Bridge damaged the structure, causing a section of the wall to fall into the Charles River.
The incident occurred around 12:50 p.m., according to Massachusetts State Police. Authorities reported no injuries. A six-foot section of the bridge's wall was dislodged and fell into the river during the collision.
An SUV was left abandoned on the sidewalk near the damaged wall. It has since been towed. Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of the SUV was side-swiped by a pickup truck after exiting the Massachusetts Turnpike, resulting in the crash.
Authorities installed a temporary barrier and confirmed that the bridge remains safe for vehicular traffic. The investigation into the hit-and-run is ongoing.
