BOSTON — A hit-and-run crash on the River Street Bridge occurred at approximately 12:50 p.m. on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, causing damage to the structure.
A six-foot section of the bridge's wall fell into the Charles River following the incident, according to Massachusetts State Police. There were no injuries reported.
An SUV was left abandoned on the sidewalk near the damaged wall and was subsequently towed from the scene. According to authorities, the driver of the SUV claimed that a pickup truck side-swiped him while he was exiting the Massachusetts Turnpike, leading to the collision with the bridge.
A temporary barrier has been installed, and police have confirmed that the bridge remains safe for traffic. Massachusetts State Police are conducting an investigation into the hit-and-run.
