Washburn Hoops Coach Brett Ballard Sustains Brain Injury Prior to August Accident.

TOPEKA, KS – August 15, 2023 – Washburn University head men's basketball coach Brett Ballard is recovering from a neurological episode that resulted in a crash on I-470.

According to authorities, the incident occurred on August 12 at approximately 2:41 p.m. on I-470. Ballard, 38, was driving when the episode caused him to lose control of his vehicle, resulting in a crash.

Emergency responders from the Shawnee County Fire Department and local police were on the scene within minutes. Ballard was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Witnesses reported seeing the vehicle veer off the roadway before coming to a stop.

Authorities confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the incident and there were no reported injuries to other motorists. The left lane of I-470 was briefly closed while responders tended to the situation.

A representative for Washburn University stated that Ballard is expected to make a full recovery and looks forward to continuing his coaching duties.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing as officials gather more information.
