Wexford County, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) — Michigan State Police are investigating a two-vehicle crash on U.S. 131, caused by an improperly secured trailer, which occurred on Aug. 28 at approximately 9:40 p.m.
Authorities reported the accident took place north of the Cadillac rest area in Clam Lake Township. A preliminary investigation revealed that an unknown vehicle detached a liquid tar construction trailer, which remained in the travel lane.
A southbound vehicle, operated by a 50-year-old man from California, struck the trailer, followed by another vehicle driven by a 25-year-old man from Oscoda, who subsequently collided with the first vehicle.
Despite significant damage to a newly constructed portion of U.S. 131, authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported. The crash site was restricted to one lane due to ongoing construction, leading to a temporary closure of the highway.
Troopers noticed that the trailer bore an illegal Texas license plate, and the vehicle identification number was obstructed. “Leaving a piece of equipment in the travel lane poses a serious risk to motorists,” stated Lt. Ashley Miller.
