BISMARCK — Two people died in a wrong-way crash on Highway 83 in Burleigh County on Sunday morning.
The incident occurred just before 10:30 a.m., approximately 20 miles north of Bismarck, amid fog that reduced visibility to about 100 yards, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol. An 80-year-old woman from Williston was traveling south in the northbound lanes in a GMC Acadia when her vehicle collided head-on with a northbound Nissan Maxima driven by a 21-year-old woman from Bismarck.
Authorities reported that the Acadia's driver was wearing a seat belt, while the driver of the Maxima was not properly restrained. Both women were transported to a Bismarck hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries.
The northbound lanes of Highway 83 were closed to non-residential traffic for approximately two hours following the crash. The North Dakota Highway Patrol is conducting an investigation into the incident.
