CARTER COUNTY, Tenn. (WCYB) — Two people are dead and several others are injured following a crash involving a vehicle and bicycles on US Highway 19E at Simerly Creek on Wednesday morning.
Carter County Sheriff Mike Fraley confirmed that the incident resulted in the deaths of two individuals, with multiple victims transported for medical treatment, including at least one by air to Johnson City Medical Center. Four students are reported to be in critical condition.
According to District Attorney Steve Finney, 69-year-old John Benfield, of North Carolina, is charged with two counts of vehicle homicide by recklessness and five counts of aggravated assault by vehicle by recklessness. He is currently booked at the Carter County Detention Center. Additional charges may be forthcoming.
Milligan University has identified the victims as sophomores Haylan Engdahl and Brayden Rodgers, both killed in the incident. The university has reported multiple other cyclists suffering serious injuries and has requested prayers for the Milligan community during this difficult time.
Ballad Health CEO Alan Levine issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the tragic event, emphasizing that trauma surgeons are on standby at Johnson City Medical Center to assist the injured. The facility is coordinating closely with law enforcement and emergency responders.
