A fiery crash involving four tractor trailers on Interstate 65 killed a Texas man and seriously injured two others on Aug. 18 in Maury County.

According to Spring Hill Police, the incident occurred near mile marker 50, affecting both northbound and southbound lanes.

Authorities identified the deceased as 59-year-old James Ebbinger from Texas. Two additional individuals sustained serious injuries.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) is investigating the crash, which began when Ebbinger's northbound 2026 Peterbilt 579 crossed over the median, triggering a chain reaction collision.

The Peterbilt first struck another tractor trailer driven by a 49-year-old Minnesota man, subsequently colliding with two more trucks operated by a 63-year-old Alabama man and a 36-year-old Florida man.

One trailer caught fire, leading to a thick cloud of smoke visible for miles, forcing authorities to close the interstate for several hours.

The THP Crash Investigation and Reconstruction Team is assisting with the inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Ebbinger's vehicle entering oncoming traffic.
