COLUMBUS, Ohio — Authorities said Monday a South Hamilton Road crash near the I-70 westbound Hamilton Road exit sparked a shooting and police standoff.
According to Columbus Police, 32-year-old Brandon Burtyk lost control at a high rate of speed while turning northbound from the I-70 westbound Hamilton Road exit and struck another vehicle.
Police said Burtyk exited and opened fire, then ran into a nearby neighborhood. Officers found him on Errington Road, where a standoff ensued.
Authorities said he was armed with two handguns and at times put them to his own head. They said he pointed the weapons at officers, told a responding officer to kill him, and fired shots that grazed an officer in the leg.
Police said rounds also struck a residence. Burtyk surrendered after throwing the guns down.
According to investigators, one handgun was stolen and the other had its serial number removed.
Both Burtyk and the injured officer were taken to Grant Medical Center for treatment. The officer who was grazed has been released, Fraternal Order of Police President Officer Brian Steel said.
Authorities said Burtyk faces at least one count of felony assault. He is being held at the Franklin County Corrections Center and is scheduled to be arraigned Monday.
