SPINK COUNTY, S.D. — A Redfield man died in a train collision Wednesday night, July 29, at approximately 7:22 p.m.
The incident took place at the intersection of 174th Street and 386th Avenue, roughly a quarter-mile east of the Redfield city limits. Paul Ray Whitley, 59, was driving a 2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited westbound on 174th Street when the vehicle struck a southbound BNSF train as it entered the intersection.
According to preliminary reports, Whitley was not wearing a seat belt and sustained fatal injuries in the crash. The South Dakota Highway Patrol is conducting an investigation into the incident.
