NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — A fatal pedestrian crash occurred Saturday afternoon when an 87-year-old driver ran a red light, striking four pedestrians on Lower Broadway.
Metro Nashville Police identified the deceased as Timothy Wedlock, 58, from Australia. The incident took place at the intersection of Fourth Avenue North and Broadway shortly after 12:30 p.m.
According to authorities, Thomas Cahill, 87, of Bowling Green, Kentucky, was driving a 2013 Ford Fusion south on Fourth Avenue when he failed to stop at the red light. Wedlock suffered fatal injuries, while a 44-year-old man from Jacksonville, Florida, remains in critical condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. A 21-year-old woman from Knoxville sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and a 58-year-old woman from Parsons, Tennessee, is in critical but stable condition.
Cahill and his 90-year-old wife, a passenger, were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Investigators are examining whether Cahill experienced a medical emergency prior to the crash. Witnesses reported that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed with no apparent attempt to brake before the collision.
The incident has raised concerns about vehicle traffic on Lower Broadway, a busy entertainment area. Metro officials noted that the area is typically closed to vehicles during peak pedestrian traffic or special events.
No charges have been filed as the Traffic Division continues its investigation.
