New Bern, NC – October 3, 2023 – Bear Town Bistro continues operations following the tragic death of owner Shawn Hoveland in a motorcycle crash last week.
Hoveland, 58, died on September 26 in Craven County after his motorcycle collided with a car. The other driver has been charged with failure to yield and misdemeanor death by vehicle, according to authorities.
In light of the incident, Bear Town Bistro has remained open, with bartender Bree Slaubaugh stating she opened the next day to support the community. “So many people care about what happens to Bear Town Bistro,” Slaubaugh said.
Customers have expressed their condolences, recalling Hoveland as a welcoming presence. “He always came out to talk when we were here. Great guy,” said customer Janet Hodges.
Slaubaugh described the moment she learned of Hoveland's death as surreal. “I was absolutely in denial,” she said. Hodges reflected on how the staff continues to work through their routines despite the loss, stating, “I can't imagine how these employees are going about their daily routine without him there.”
The staff is committed to honoring Hoveland's legacy by maintaining the restaurant's operations. “Honestly, I feel like he was proud to see us push through the pain and do that for him,” Slaubaugh added. Hoveland was instrumental in creating the menu and fostering connections with customers, a void that Slaubaugh has felt in his absence.
Customers hope the restaurant's resilience will shine through in these challenging times. “They made it back in the pandemic days when nobody was open… I hope it continues,” said Hodges.
Bear Town Bistro, regarded as a family by its employees, is actively hiring for various positions but emphasized that Hoveland cannot be replaced.
