PORTAGE, Mich. — A 74-year-old Comstock Park man died after a crash on southbound US-131 Thursday morning.
The Portage Department of Public Safety responded at approximately 8 a.m. to a single-vehicle crash north of the I-94 interchange. Investigators report a pickup truck towing a trailer left the roadway, traveled down an embankment, struck multiple trees, and came to rest in the center median.
The driver was identified as Frederick Gilbert. Witnesses indicated that Gilbert changed from the right lane to the left before losing control on a slight curve. He was found unresponsive inside the truck.
Firefighters performed CPR after extracting him from the vehicle. Gilbert was transported to Bronson Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities believe he may have suffered a medical emergency prior to the crash; however, the investigation into the exact cause is ongoing.
