MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (WBFF) — A fatal crash involving a stolen vehicle driven by juveniles occurred Tuesday evening in Germantown, Maryland.
According to Montgomery County Police, seven children aged 12 to 15 were passengers in a stolen sedan when it collided with another vehicle, resulting in the death of the other driver.
Authorities identified the victim as 58-year-old Vance Payne, who was commuting to work at the time of the incident.
Payne's family issued a statement, saying, “We are focusing on our family right now as we process the tragic and painful loss of a devoted father, husband, and friend to so many. Please respect our privacy at this time.”
The crash has reignited discussions regarding juvenile crime and accountability in the state. Del. Kathy Szeliga, R-Baltimore County, has called for a public information campaign to warn juveniles about the consequences of crimes involving stolen vehicles.
“I would like to see Governor Wes Moore and other leaders inform young people that this behavior has to stop,” Szeliga stated.
Previous incidents involving juveniles and stolen vehicles have raised similar concerns. In June, a 14-year-old driving a stolen car struck and killed a three-year-old in Baltimore.
Residents expressed their concerns to FOX45 News, emphasizing the need for stronger consequences for repeat juvenile offenders. “Parents need to take responsibility for their children and not allow them access to their keys,” one resident said.
As discussions continue, many Maryland drivers hope for measures that will enhance road safety, particularly regarding dangerous driving behavior among juveniles.
