NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — One pedestrian was killed and three others injured when an 87-year-old driver ran a red light on Lower Broadway on Saturday afternoon.
Authorities identified the deceased as Timothy Wedlock, 58, from Australia. The crash occurred around 12:30 p.m. at Fourth Avenue North and Broadway, a busy pedestrian area.
According to investigators, Thomas Cahill, 87, of Bowling Green, Kentucky, was driving a 2013 Ford Fusion south on Fourth Avenue when he failed to stop at a red light, hitting four pedestrians crossing legally.
Wedlock succumbed to his injuries. A 44-year-old man from Jacksonville, Florida, remains in critical condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. A 21-year-old woman from Knoxville suffered non-life-threatening injuries, while a 58-year-old woman from Parsons, Tennessee, is in critical but stable condition at the same facility.
Investigators are examining whether Cahill experienced a medical emergency before the crash. Authorities noted that Cahill showed no signs of impairment at the scene.
Both Cahill and his 90-year-old wife, a passenger in the vehicle, were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The wife's caregiver, present in the back seat, indicated that she was looking at her phone prior to the collision.
The crash prompted bystanders to assist victims, with reports of CPR being performed by nearby business employees.
No charges have been filed as the Traffic Division's investigation continues. Metro officials are reviewing vehicle traffic policies on Lower Broadway, which may be restricted during heavy pedestrian activity.
