Man Sentenced to Up to 10½ Years for Fatal Police Chase Incident

CINCINNATI — Khalid James, 34, has been sentenced to serve eight to 10½ years in prison following a fatal crash that occurred while he was fleeing from police on September 16, 2024.

Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge Alison Hatheway imposed the sentence on November 5. Authorities reported that James was driving without a valid license and was wanted for multiple offenses, including three traffic violations, a misdemeanor assault, and a probation violation related to a 2019 drunken driving case.

During a police chase lasting approximately 1½ minutes, James' vehicle sideswiped another and ran a red light at the intersection of Kemper and Pippin roads, traveling at speeds near 90 mph. He collided with a Ford Fusion driven by 72-year-old Ricky Mills, a local park volunteer who was just beginning to cross the intersection.

Mills died as a result of the crash. James pleaded guilty in August to several charges, including aggravated vehicular homicide.

The crash prompted an investigation by local authorities, with police confirming that James' driver's license was suspended at the time of the incident.
