Injury Accident: Semi-Tanker Overturns, Spills Gasoline on Roadway

SPRINGVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — An overturned semi-tanker closed State Road 54 near the Greene County/Lawrence County line Thursday.

According to the Indiana State Police Bloomington District, the incident involved a semi-truck hauling 8,600 gallons of gasoline. The truck ran off the roadway and overturned around 2:41 p.m., spilling a significant amount of flammable liquid and creating a hazardous materials scene.

Troopers reported that drivers of passing vehicles, including a dump truck and a secondary semi, used fire extinguishers to extinguish flames that ignited on the crashed truck.

The driver, 36-year-old Timofy V. Mazhnyy of Newburgh, was transported to IU Health Bloomington for treatment of minor injuries. A passenger, 49-year-old Randall L. McKee, was flown to a Louisville, Kentucky, hospital for more serious injuries.

State Road 54 remained closed for several hours to facilitate the removal of the semi and cleanup of the hazardous materials. The investigation is ongoing.
